How Long Does It Take to Clean Credit?
In this economical fog many of us are left in tough financial situations and are unable to prevent delays in payment of our bills, credit card payments, mortgage and other loan repayments. Learn how these delays translate your credit score and also impact your future borrowings.
Let’s first look into how banks, in general, classify delayed payments by customers. Usually one late payment by you is treated as ‘delayed payment’ and if the delay is beyond 90 days, situation gets worse for you as banks consider the account as ‘delinquent’ and are empowered to take action against you. Do all these payment delays affect your credit score? No.
Late by a few days (less than 30 days) – Such delays do not have an effect on your credit scores and you continue to hold a clean credit. You may only end up paying some fees or in some cases you will have to deal with increased interest rates.
Late by over 30 days – Such delays are of utmost concern to lenders and are reported to major credit bureaus such as TransUnion, Experian and Equifax thereby reflecting a negative implication of your credit profile. Credit scores drop as much as 75 points; and if the delay extends beyond 60 days the dent in scores is much deeper.
Inquiries – Your credit report keeps a record of the number of times your credit report was sought. Request for your credit report can be made either by you or your existing lender or any prospective lender. Numerous inquiries in a relatively short period usually give a picture that you are scouting for loans, which can be detrimental to your credit profile.
Involuntarily your credit profile is tainted with ‘delinquency’ or ‘bankruptcy’ or with ‘excessive inquiries’, wondering how long it takes to clean your credit? Excessive inquiries stay for almost 2 years in your credit report; however they diminish with passing time. Adverse credit circumstances arising from delays, delinquencies, etc., continue for at least 5-7 years and 10 years in case of a bankruptcy, in your credit report. Cleaning your credit entirely may take some time and you must be cautious to make timely payments and generate positive reports to be eligible for any future borrowings.
